::: Laidback Luke Interview
Holland’s beloved house music-loving homeboy, Laidback Luke, is on an international mission to rock clubs, win hearts and top charts. A producer and DJ with immense talent, tonnes of spirit and a steely determination to succeed, he has been on a worldwide search for the ultimate in dance floor energy since the mid-1990s. “Music is an amazing tool that can evoke powerful memories and emotions,” says Luke with a smile. “And I will not rest until I’ve given my best: I want to share as much music as possible with as many people as possible.” And with an incredibly impressive discography of 100+ recordings and a DJ diary that takes him from his studio near Amsterdam to clubs all over the world, it would seem that Luke is well on the way to achieve his goals...

::: Photo Album | 2009.03.27 » Essential WMC 2009 | 4.2 MN2S @ Nikki Beach [Miami]

Every year our good friends MN2S put on one of our most heralded shows for WMC. This year, the venue moved to the illustrious Nikki Beach and was an all day all night affair featuring a staggering line-up. Armand van Helden, ATFC, Funkerman, Yves Larock, David Penn, Danism, Jay-J, Robert Owens, Ron Carroll, Tedd Patterson, and more graced the decks in this absolute showcase of house music.

What looked on paper as the marquee event for 2009, quickly became one of the bigger disappointments of the year. Nikki Beach has evolved into the case in point of the problems with Miami clubbing. The huge beach area, which used to be the coolest dancefloor in South Beach, has now evolved into a small little area located in front of a gigantic array of bottle service beds. The result is the half empty bed service area really took away from being able to create any sort of vibe. In years past, when the sands were packed full of partiers rocking out in the sunshine was one of the best feelings of Miami. Now it just felt like a separation of who has a couple grand to spend, and who wants to have fun.

The second problem was the timeslots. While the overall line-up was most impressive and featured many of the hottest house tastemakers in the land, the prime time beach sets featured a very lack lustre assortment of talent and programming. Virtual unknowns in North America, Laurent Wolf and Alex Gaudino were given prime slots concluding with Armand Van Helden closing out the beach. Now we're all for breaking new talent or showcasing lesser known DJs, but we expect they have the musical chops to warrant it. Unfortunately for us, Wolf and Gaudino's music selection was exceptionally dated, very sporadic and uninspired. While Gaudino did have great energy on the decks, the programming leapt from sexy house to electro to French tribal with no flow or logical progression. Then when Armand took over, his too cool for school approach was too much for us. Basically playing a solid flow of every big hit he had made in the past 10 years - although at times had moments of great nostalgia - the overall set felt very indulgent and you could feel his holier-than-thou attitude off the decks. All the while the music inside the lower level of the club was AMAZING, but with very minimal crowd, mostly bathroom goers and people looking for short bar lines it was left unappreciated. If we could have swapped the DJs we think we would have had a much better musical experience.

It was very unfortunate, as the night time line-up featured amazing talent and the people we really wanted to see... Funkerman, ATFC, Jay-J, David Penn, and countless more. What was so disappointing was the energy and sexiness that we've come to love from MN2S - and really wanted during the afternoon - was held back for the evening portion of the show, and we just couldn't last and wait for it. We still love the MN2S boys and always will recommend their shows, and the 2008 WMC edition was one of the best we've ever had, let's hope for 2010 they can bring it back.
